GOING BRAZILIAN NUTS

While taking supplemental selenium—a powerful antioxidant that combats the damage that free radicals cause in the body—can be a great way to ensure you get adequate amounts, it’s not entirely necessary to add another pill to your vitamin regimen. Brazil nuts include as much as 95 mcg of selenium per nut. Given that the RDA for selenium is 55 mcg, popping a couple of Brazil nuts per day can do the trick.

EXERCISE THE DEMONS

You may not need drugs to reduce your neuropathic (nerve) pain. According to a recent study, exercise helps alleviate pain related to nerve damage by reducing levels of infl ammation-promoting factors called cytokines. The results provide support for exercise as a helpful, nondrug therapy for nerve pain—potentially reducing the need for medications and their resulting side effects.

AND THE BEET GOES ON

Recent studies suggest that the abundance of nitric oxide (NO) in beets can improve athletic performance. Think beyond borscht. Beets don’t have to be consumed in the form of the traditional Russian soup to be benefi cial. From juices and smoothies to salads and side dishes, beets can add an earthy sweetness to your meals, while giving you a leg up on the competition. Flip to page 80 for a complete “beet-down.”

BACHELOR ADVANTAGE

Studies have shown that the testosterone levels of men can be temporarily lowered through contact with the tears of an infant. It’s one more reason why new dads struggle to keep in peak physical condition. When in doubt on fi ght night, bet on the bachelor.

WIRE TRANSFER
