Spontaneous Combustion

Brynne Ridgewell

Autumn in the Southeast is a beautiful time of year and a complimentary backdrop to this month’s lovely guest. With winter fast approaching, Brynne Ridgewell is sure to warm your heart and give us all something to be thankful for.

What’s going on in Atlanta these days?

Well, the weather is finally perfect. Fall in Atlanta is beautiful, so in between my classes at Emory, it’s great to be outside.

Are you an outdoorsy girl?

I love being outside—to go on a nice long run or a walk in the park. It’s much better than being stuck inside. I’m from Tallahassee, Florida, originally, so I miss walking on the sand and being able to see the ocean, but Atlanta has some really beautiful parks.

Brynne RidgewellWhat else do you miss about Florida?

Oh, my favorite food in the world—One Fresh Stir-Fry. They make the best stir-fry, so whenever my family or friends come to visit me, I try and make them bring me some. It’s so delicious. I would totally take a four-hour road trip for this stir-fry. It’s that good.

So, a smart guy who wanted a date with you would just need a box of stir-fry and to take you on a walk in the park?

Yeah [laughing]. I’m a simple girl. No stupid pickup lines for me.

Have you heard some bad ones lately?

This guy came up to me and my friend last month, and he’s like, ‘Hey, have you seen this perfect, humble guy with brown hair and brown eyes and a green t-shirt and flip-flops?’ And he keeps going on and on, and he’s describing himself. My friend, who is a no-nonsense kinda girl, basically laughed in his face. But if he had just come up to us and had a real conversation, he would have been a lot better off. Make me laugh, keep me smiling, but don’t feed me some cheesy line about being the perfect guy. Just be genuine.

Let’s flip the script. How would you pick up a guy?

Well, if I had to make a gameplan right now: I’d probably pretend to be a little nerdy and talk to him about studying biology at Emory, and then I would slip in there that I do a little bit of modeling, and then I’d bust out my guitar and play a few tunes [laughing]. Then I’d give him a quick seductive look.

Be honest, do guys just melt when you look at them with those baby blues?

Sometimes [laughing]. My eyes are my favorite feature.

Do they ever get you into trouble?

No way. I’m trouble-free.

What do you in Atlanta to stay out of trouble?

I love to go dancing and listen to live music. Alternative, dj, folk, electro-house—I listen to it all, and I love to dance.

So you’ve got some good dance moves?

I’ve got some great moves. I did karate for six years, so I’ve got all kinds of moves.

Are you still flexible enough to land a head kick?

I don’t think that would be a problem [laughing].

What else did karate teach you?

I was really small growing up, so karate was good because it taught me how to protect myself. But it’s really more of a discipline thing. It’s a beautiful art, and really makes you focus on attention to details. That’s something that I learned from karate that will always be with me—even when I’m not flexible enough to land that head kick [laughing].

Are you a big MMA fan?

I like to get together with my friends and go watch the fights on pay-per-view every month. It’s such an exciting sport.

What’s your favorite thing about MMA?

I would have to say the spontaneity of everything. You never know what’s going to happen. I love that aspect. I really love to be spontaneous.

Tell us about one of your fonder spontaneous moments?

That’s a hard one because there are just so many. But one day, I just woke up and decided that I wanted to play the guitar. So, I taught myself how to play. I’ve never taken a lesson. It’s the same thing with modeling. One day, I just decided to give it a try. And boom, here I am.

Besides spontaneous, what one word would your friends use to describe you?

Caring. I’ll do anything for my friends. I’ll bend over backwards if I have to.

Bend over backwards? I hope you consider FIGHT! your new friend now.

Definitely [laughing].

Thanks Brynne. We couldn’t be more thankful.
