Editor's Letter: February 2013

Yes, it’s February, but FIGHT! still has unfinished business with 2012. That’s right, it’s time once again for our annual awards. Gracing the cover for the second time is our newest Fighter of the Year, Benson Henderson. After dethroning previous lightweight champ Frankie Edgar to take the belt, Henderson proceeded to defend his newly acquired gold in their ensuing rematch. More recently, he solidified his dominance at lightweight against a very different but equally dangerous opponent in Nate Diaz. Henderson’s consistency and outstanding performances in what many consider to be the most stacked division in MMA made him a clear choice for our Fighter of the Year.

For the rest of the awards, 2012 provided us with a plethora of exciting options to consider. From Chan Sung Jung and Dustin Poirier’s barn burner, to Ronda Rousey’s well deserved hype train, the nominees were varied and numerous. After much debate amongst our staff and contributors, we have whittled them down to our final selections. Turn to page 48 to find out if our choices match your own, and be sure to let us know if you disagree.

2013 may not have meteors, zombies, or the Mayan apocalypse on the horizon, but if the first few weeks of the new year are any indication, the MMA universe has plenty of mayhem in store.
