Jason Miller On Big Bitches, Hot Dog Dogs and 'Jon & Kate Plus 8'
On Nov. 7, Jason “Mayhem” Miller will make his Strikeforce debut when he fights Jake Shields for the organization’s vacant middleweight championship. The charismatic fighter has competed professionally since 2001, has a 22-6 record and is the current Kingdom MMA 185-pound champion, but he can thank his reality show antics for most of his notoriety. The 28-year-old has hosts “Bully Beatdown” on MTV, pens colorful editorials for our very own FIGHT! Magazine and appears regularly on Jason Ellis’ Sirius XM Satellite Radio show.
FIGHT!: I was talking to Sean Patrick Flanery from Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day and he said you spent some time training at his gym Hollywood Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Mayhem: Yeah, I go over there once in a while. Those guys are nice enough to let me use their gym sometimes, and I’ll bring my training partners or what not, and [they] also supply some bodies to come in there and roll.
FIGHT!: Do you train there often or is this one of the first times you’ve worked out over there?
Mayhem: Nah, you know. I mean, my consistent training camp is built around me, mostly in Orange County, but I do Hollywood stuff [too]. I go to Fortune Boxing Gym on Sunset [Boulevard] and I also go to Hollywood [Brazilian] Jiu-Jitsu, as well as the new Legends. I have to maintain my training, even though I do, you know, Hollywood garbage.
FIGHT!: Last time we spoke, you told me you were into some underground hip-hop like Sage Francis and–
Mayhem: I also like electro and a lot of European music that hasn’t really gotten huge in America.
FIGHT!: Like electronica, electro rock or Euro metal?
Mayhem: Electro like Daft Punk or like Boys Noize, or like uhm … recently, I stumbled onto … aw man! Who are they? Oh, they’re not on my damn iPod. Son of a bitch! Nevermind! But yeah, but Daft Punk was some of the pioneers of that house, electro stuff. Boys Noize is bringing in a new wave of techno. But what?
FIGHT!: Well, I was going to ask if you there was any hip-hop artists or genre of hip-hop that you hate.
Mayhem: What do you mean? That’s a general question. I don’t know. I don’t really go so far as to say I hate somebody or hate someone’s music in particular. I just don’t listen to it.
FIGHT!: So Mayhem Miller is not a hater?
Mayhem: Yeah. I’m not a hater. I’m just like, “alright, well, cool.” Like those kids on The Hills … man I hate them. But honestly, somebody likes them. I just don’t watch it. I’m shocked Jon & Kate Plus 8, fricking, those people are in the tabloids nonstop and they make easy money just for pumpin’ out a bunch of kids. But I don’t hate ‘em for it. I’m just shocked that America is so dumb to be entranced by them.
FIGHT!: I feel ya. It’s like every time I walk into Barnes & Noble or even a grocery store, the Gosselin’s are everywhere. It’s like are we that bored where we need to be–
Mayhem: Yeah. The answer sir is yes, yes we are. We’re bored. We want something that … 99% of our daily lives are filled with the grit and grind of daily work that does not make us happy. So in order for us to be happy, we have to see somebody else suffering or somebody else being awesome and just be bitter on the outside. It takes a lot more courage to be the person on the inside being ostracized or being ridiculed, or being looked at in the zoo. It’s easier to go to the 9 to 5 than give your opinion.
FIGHT!: Alright. So what makes you happy, Mayhem?
Mayhem: What really makes me happy is I realized … like, nothing happens after I die. It’s the same as before I was born, so I have a limited time on this earth to accomplish the most that I can with my life. That brings me infinite happiness more than anything else that could. The fact that human understanding has come to a point where I understand where I am on this earth and to peel back the curtain just a little bit to reveal that there is a little bit more to this world, that makes me happy. Also my hot dog dog Gator.
FIGHT!: Excuse me, but did you say you had a hot dog named Gator?
Mayhem: It’s a hot dog dog, bro. Don’t call him a hot dog! That’s like calling him the N-word, just so you know. He’s a hot dog dog.
FIGHT!: Ok. Didn’t mean any disrespect by calling your dog a hot dog. Anyways, you’ve given your fight picks on G4’s Attack Of The Show, so let me ask you: who would win in a fight? Olivia Munn or Blair Butler?
Mayhem: I gotta say, Olivia Munn is a big bitch. But I have a feeling that Blair Butler, based on the sheer knowledge of the sport, she would take it in a long, drawn out fight. I think in the late rounds. Are we talking about a championship, or three rounder? Because the size factor is gonna wear on Olivia Munn because she is really tall. I think she’s got the reach, but I just think eventually Blair is gonna get her on he ground and submit her, ala Royce Gracie.
FIGHT!: Who would host Kevin Pereira corner?
Mayhem: I don’t know, man. He wouldn’t be in anyone’s corner. I just think he’d be smoking weed in the second row.
