5 Minutes with Dana White
Is Fedor overrated?
We don’t know. We don’t know until he fights the best in the world. I think to be considered the best, you have to come in and clean out a division. You have to be where Matt Hughes was. Matt Hughes had wiped out the entire division, and the only guy left really was
So you’re saying Fedor shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as a heavyweight as Matt Hughes is as a welterweight.
I agree. Exactly. That’s what I said. And even Chuck Liddell. I think Chuck Liddell is one of the greatest light heavyweights ever, if not the greatest. But there was always Wanderlei [Silva] and Shogun [Mauricio Rua] out there. And I tried for so fucking long to make that Wanderlei fight when the mystique was around it. But yeah, Fedor would have to come in and do to the heavyweights what Matt Hughes did to the welterweight division.
Say one nice thing about Tito Ortiz.
Ah… [tortuously long pause]. I actually believe that Tito Ortiz…hmmm…let me think about this. Fuck that’s hard. [Another long pause] There was a time when I really liked Tito; Tito was a good friend of mine.
Is all this bad blood between the two of you on the level?
It’s real. Everything you see with me and him is real. I’m not a fucking actor, you know what I mean? I’m not an actor and I don’t want to be an actor. What can I say good about Tito Ortiz? He trains hard.
So, how did The Ultimate Fighter come about?
Craig Piligian, who was the executive producer for Survivor, also did American Casino with the Fertitta’s casino, and one of them [the Fertitta brothers] started talking to him about doing a reality show. He was interested, so me and a bunch of my staff went into my office at 7:30 at night and came out at 3:30 in the morning with The Ultimate Fighter.
What is a song that you jam out to, that no man should be caught listening to?
Do you mean what song do I listen to that I wouldn’t want anybody fucking knowing I’m listening to? [Laughs] That’s fucking funny, actually. There’s probably a couple. The Pussycat Dolls, I like their song Beep.
Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, or Jessica Simpson?
Oh shit.
You only get one.
You only get one? I want two.
You only get one. Come on, you’re a decision maker.
Jessica Alba.
That is the correct answer, by the way.
I like Jessica Biel too, though.
When you were eight years old, what was you ambition in life?
I’ve always been into fighting. It’s all I ever cared about. It’s all I ever liked. It’s all I was ever interested in. I never liked other sports; I never liked football, baseball, any of that stuff. I never liked any of it. All I ever liked is fighting. I was into boxing, and I loved Bruce Lee and Chuck
Norris.
Who is your favorite boxer?
Muhammad Ali. I just like everything about the guy. If you go into my house I have Muhammad Ali everywhere. I mean, we own the UFC, and the first thing you’ll notice when you walk into my office is the biggest picture that you’ve ever seen in your life of Muhammad Ali.
Do you think that in fifty years people will look back at guys like Couture and Liddell in the way people look back at fighters like Marcianno or Ali now?
No doubt about it.
