This Is HardCore is a new regular feature on Fightmagazine.com written by HardCore gym co-owner Adam Singer.

I was going to write this post about UFC 113, but outside of the sweet revenge for Shogun I did not have much to say. Lucky for me, Martin Rooney’s new book came out last week. Ultimate Warrior Workouts (Training for Warriors): Fitness Secrets of the Martial Arts is available at all major bookstores. Before I review this book I need to be honest with everyone. Martin is my friend and a mentor. My gym has successfully used his programs to condition former WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles along with countless other amateur and professional fighters. These are also the exact methods Martin used to get UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar in shape for his fight with BJ Penn.

In his new book Martin spent about two years traveling around the world to the heart of what makes up MMA. He kick boxed in Holland and Thailand, grappled in Russia and Brazil, and wrestled in Iowa. He trained at some of the top gyms in the world along side some of the best fighters in the world. Martin’s goal: to learn what methods and exercises these disciplines used to get their fighters ready. From sinister partner drills to killer body weight training, it’s all in here. Want to know how the Dutch condition their bodies for their brutal style of kickboxing? It’s in here. Want to know how the Russians really use Kettle bells? It’s in here. This book is 384 pages and over 1000 pictures of the best exercises and training from the arts that make up MMA.

Martin has also included a cutting edge warm up program building off his very popular Training for Warriors program, a chapter on nutrition and my favorite part, a full six-month workout program. I would have easily paid full price just for the workout program. Don’t worry if you have Martins first book, Training for Warriors. Martin has tweaked and improved all aspects of his program. This latest is a great companion to the first book and takes you even further into the program.

So to wrap it up, run, don’t walk to your nearest bookstore and purchase Ultimate Warrior Workouts (Training for Warriors): Fitness Secrets of the Martial Arts. Try some of Martins new “Warrior Challenges” and start the 6-month program. You will not be sorry.
