The stated goal of the Amateur Pankration League to get the ancient Greek art re-instated to the Olympic Games. For now they’ll have to settle for the US Pankration National Championships, set to take place on Oct. 25 at Santa Ana High in Santa Ana, Calif. Amateur combatants of all styles and schools compete at Santa Ana High, in California for team awards, and individual awards. Champion belts for all divisions, four adult finalists will be named a Pankration All-American. The event also determines the Non-Endyma division National Championships, which is sort of like no-Gi jiu jitsu (the Endyma is the Pankration uniform), and athletes who place in sanctioned events are seeded into the World Team Trials.
Eligible athletes include: amateur, non-licensed fighters and non-licensed fighters with less than two professional/semi-pro wins (fighters with less than two wins are considered amateurs). The event is in union with the ASICS Southern Wrestling Academy, which will host its first annual MMA Camp on October 24 at Santa Ana High. A fundraiser to benefit the Santa Ana Saint’s – their wrestling team, the camp has attracted serious talent: three-time World Jiu-Jitsu champion Marcio Feitosa, Icon featherweight champion Bao Quach, and “The Ultimate Fighter US vs. UK” winner James Wilks.
