At FIGHT! Magazine, we believe there is a need for a completely objective and unbiased ranking system for fighters to replace the myriad subjective rankings that have become skewed, in many instances, by fighter popularity. In an effort to address this issue FIGHT! Magazine brings you its computerized rankings system which takes into account a fighters strength of opponent, strength of performance, and frequency of activity.
When the magazine launched in 2007, we backfilled our database with full results from all UFC, WEC, and Pride events as well as International Fight League and bodogFight cards. We added Strikeforce, EliteXC, Dream, Sengoku, and Bellator when those promotions launched and included select one-off shows when they involved noteworthy fighters. Now, in an effort to provide fans with richer data and more accurate rankings, FIGHT! Magazine is aggressively expanding the number of qualifying organizations in our rankings database.
These new additions to our rankings database are chosen according to their track record and stability, reputation and presentation, quality of matchmaking, and ability to attract internationally-known fighters and/or place home-grown fighters in top-tier organizations.
Over the next several months, FIGHT! will add organizations to our database when appropriate and the results of those fights will factor into our rankings calculations. This weekend we added four promotions to our database: Omaha, Neb.-based Victory Fighting Championship, Wallid Ismail’s Brazilian Jungle Fight Championship, and Australia’s Xtreme MMA and Rize.
Ten pro fights filled the main card of VFC 32 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, including two UFC vets and two Bellator vets. The VFC 32 bouts represented the third qualifying bout for each of those four fighters, and each entered our rankings.
FIGHT!’s Full Time Fighter winner Drew Dober enters our Lightweight Rankings at #48 with his stoppage win over unranked Jimmy Seipel. Ryan Robers enters our Featherweight Rankings at #22 with a decision win over Eric Marriott, who enters our rankings at #43. And Razak Al-Hassan enters our Light Heavyweight Rankings at #48 with his submission win over unranked Demetrius Richards.
XMMA 2: Anz vs. USA popped off in Sydney on Sat. night. It’s a new promotion but its second card featured UFC, Strikeforce, and Sengoku vets on a maincard that pitted American fighters against hometown fighters from Australia and New Zealand.
Headliner and Strikeforce heavyweight prospect Daniel Cormier picked up his third qualifying fight – a TKO victory over unranked Lucas Browne – and enters our Heavyweight Rankings at #40. Sengoku veteran big man Jim York enters our rankings at #43 with his defeat of Felise Lineu and Aussie heavyweight Peter Graham was installed at #53 with his win over unranked Carter Williams.
In Light Heavyweight action, Bobby Southworth re-enters our 205-pound poll at #26 with a win over unranked Aaron Boyes. UFC vet Marvin Eastman clawed his way back into the rankings, taking #77 in the Middleweight Rankings with his win over Api Hemara.
No ranked fighters appeared on the Jungle Fight 21 or Rize 6 cards but all of them will be eligible once three of their fights have been entered into our database.
