MMA Daily Buzz: Dog (Nearly) Neuters Man, Greg Jackson Makes Bank, AKA Looks to Franchise
(Because the staff of MMAFighting.com constituted half of Moosin’s PPV audience…)
Not a lot serious chatter in the MMA Nation today unless you count the hubbub over Kyacey Uscola nearly being neutered by a pitbull outside of the TUF house in Vegas. If that you’re looking for something lighter than a dog-bites-man story, I highly suggest this Cagepotato list of MMA’s greatest conspiracy theories.
(Insert Your Town) AKA Opening Soon
San Jose’s American Kickboxing Academy announced that it will launch a licensing program at the UFC Fan Expo. Following in the footsteps of Pat Miletich, Bas Rutten, John Hackleman, Ricardo Liborio and the Tapout Crew, AKA’s Javier Mendez will license his gym’s brand, training philosphy, and merchandise to affiliate gyms around the country. Now you, too, can create problems for matchmakers by stockpiling all the welterweight talent in your town!
Greg Jackson: Trainer, Promoter, Entrepreneur
Greg Jackson might be one of the nicest guys in MMA but he’s no sucker. The trainer works with an ever-growing network of world champion fighters, contenders, and affiliated gyms, and he is leveraging that to make some coin. According to the June issue of ESPN the Magazine, Jackson charges $500 per hour for private training sessions and according to ProMMANow he is launching a branded fighting promotion, Jackson’s MMA Series, at the new Hard Rock Casino and Hotel in Albuquerque, N.M. The show will highlight up-and-comers from Jackson’s gym as well as affiliated gyms like Trevor Whitman’s Grudge Training Center in Denver, Colo.
Jackson’s MMA Series I will take place on June 5 and feature Hook ‘n’ Shoot, Bodog Fight, and EliteXC veteran Julie Kedzie. The fighter has struggled with top competition, dropping fights to Gina Carano, Tara LaRosa, and Shayna Baszler, but also boasts not one, not two, but three wins over Jan Finney, the woman who will challenge Strikeforce Women’s 145 pound champion Cris Cyborg on June 26. If Finney is deserving of a title shot, Strikeforce could at least feature Kedzie on a Challenger’s card alongside about a half-dozen other solid female fighters who need the work.
