FIGHT! Rankings

At FIGHT! Magazine, we believe there is a need for a completely objective and unbiased ranking system for fighters to replace the myriad of subjective rankings that have become skewed, in many instances, by fighter popularity. In an effort to address this issue FIGHT! Magazine brings you its computerized rankings system which takes into account a fighters strength of opponent, strength of performance, and frequency of activity.

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia maintained his position – #18 – in FIGHT!’s Heavyweight Rankings after winning his good old-fashioned freak fight against unranked strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski. In other main event action, Travis Wiuff moved up one spot in our Light Heavyweight Rankings, from #45 to #44 with his win over unranked Josh Barnes. Former UFC title challenger Travis Lutter is now ranked #84 at Middlweight after getting stopped by unraked Rafael Natal, and UFC vet Yves Edwards drops from #86 to #107 in our Lightweight Rankings with his loss to Mike Campbell.

Matt Lee climbs from #95 to #87 in our Welterweight rankings with his win over unranked Brett Oteri – also at 170, UFC vet Forrest Petz joins our rankings at #49 while KOTC vet Anthony Lapsley enters our rankings at #50.

Odds & Ends

Sylvia on the atmosphere: “I thought it was a little bit of a hostile crowd to be honest with you. (laughs from audience) I consider myself a bit of a legend in MMA and I hear Mariusz go out there and the crowd’s going crazy! And when I get there—it’s probably, I’m guessing it’s 40-60 for him. I’m going out there. I see Polish guys screaming at me and yelling his name. Fortunately, the fight went kind of the way I wanted it to go, and I kind of switched it back over. I got lucky this time.”

Eric “Butterbean” Esch: “During our national anthem, Mariusz calmed down all the Polish fans. I have so much respect for him to do that. I’ve been to other countries and they don’t respect us. I have nothing but respect for this man for doing that.”

Mariusz Pudzianowski—via translator—on the atmosphere: “It was a great atmosphere. I want to thank all the fans, all the Polish fans who came here to support me. It was absolutely great.”

Pudzianowski on why he tapped: “The conditioning by far was the deciding factor for me not continuing the fight.”

Yves Edwards on the judges’ decision: “I expected a lot out of Mike and I got all I expected. That guy is a lot stronger that you think he is. But it’s up to the judges, man…he got the W and the judges saw a reason to give it to him.”

Mike Campbell’s thoughts on his decision win over Edwards: “Honestly, I was scared as hell going into this fight, and Yves Edwards is a legend in this sport. And I was honored to fight him. I thought the fight was a very close fight. But like Yves, when you leave it up to the judges it could go either way. I was just as unsure as Yves was when we were standing in the middle of that ring at the end of the fight…”
